What Does “People First” Actually Mean?

When I first started dreaming up Hello Small Brands, I knew I didn’t want it to be just another shopping website.

When I first started dreaming up Hello Small Brands, I knew I didn’t want it to be just another shopping website. The internet already has enough places to compare prices, browse endless products, and chase the next trend.

I wanted to create something different.

I wanted to build a place where every purchase could contribute to something greater, and where shoppers could discover brands that are trying to make the world just a little bit better.

That’s why every brand featured on Hello Small Brands aligns with at least one of four pillars. One of the most important to me is People First.

But what does that actually mean?

More Than a Buzzword

“People First” gets thrown around a lot. I first wanted to call it “progressive employers” but then thought that first word everyone's panties in a bunch and make people think I was getting political. Just a reminder, the word progressive on its own is really positive!!

Contrary to this AI world we live in, I still believe that businesses exist because of people, not despite them. I’ve worked in tech my whole life and even in the tech world, a machine cannot create a happy working environment. A machine cannot laugh and connect and think beyond the parameters of what you put into it. That is why people still matter, and will continue to matter..

Every successful business is built by human beings, and I believe those people deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

Small businesses have an incredible opportunity.

Unlike massive corporations, many of them know every employee by name. They celebrate birthdays together. They understand when someone needs flexibility because a child is sick. They recognize that behind every job title is a real life.

I’ve met founders who started their companies because they wanted to create the kind of workplace they wished they’d had; one where people aren’t expected to sacrifice their health, families, or happiness just to earn a paycheck.

Those are the businesses I want to celebrate.

What Being People First Looks Like

There’s no single checklist. Every business is different, and no company is perfect.

But People First brands often share values like:

  • Paying fair wages whenever they can.
  • Offering paid vacation and encouraging employees to actually unplug.
  • Supporting new parents with maternity or paternity leave.
  • Prioritizing mental health and preventing burnout.
  • Creating safe, respectful workplaces where everyone belongs.
  • Providing flexibility when life inevitably happens.
  • Investing in employees instead of treating them as replaceable.

For some businesses, that might mean offering generous benefits. For others, it might simply mean leading with compassion and doing the very best they can.Intent matters. Progress matters.

Why It Matters More Than Ever

The way a company treats its people doesn’t stay inside the office walls. It spills into homes, schools, neighborhoods, and communities. When parents have time to bond with a new baby, children benefit. When employees are paid fairly, financial stress decreases. When people can take time off to rest, they’re healthier, happier, and more productive when they return.

When workplaces openly support mental health, people are more likely to seek help before burnout becomes overwhelming.

These aren’t just feel-good ideas, they create stronger businesses and healthier communities.

"Research has consistently found that organizations investing in employee well-being experience lower absenteeism, higher productivity, and stronger employee retention. Healthy workplaces aren’t just good for people, they’re good for business, too."

-Lyndsey Fish, Founder, HSB

Small Brands Are Leading the Way

One of the things I love most about independent brands is that they often build their businesses around values instead of shareholders. They’re founded by people who remember what it felt like to be overlooked, underpaid, overworked, or unheard. So they build something different. Not because it’s trendy. Because it’s personal. Because they’ve lived it.

And while they may never have thousands of employees, they can still change hundreds of lives through the culture they create.

That’s meaningful.

Shopping Is a Choice

Every dollar we spend supports a business model. Sometimes we’re simply buying a candle.

Or a sweater.

Or a piece of jewelry, or even something as simple as a sponge for the kitchen (shoutout Full Circle Home!)

But we’re also supporting the company behind that product. The values they hold, people they employ and the culture they create.

At Hello Small Brands, we believe it’s worth celebrating businesses that are trying to do right by the people who make their success possible. Not because they’re perfect but because they’re at least trying.

A Better Way to Do Business

Being People First isn’t about choosing people over profit. It’s about recognizing that long-term success is built by investing in people. The happiest employees create better customer experiences. Supported parents build stronger families. Healthy workplaces create stronger communities. And businesses that genuinely care about people leave a legacy that extends far beyond the products they sell.

That’s why People First is one of the four pillars of Hello Small Brands.

Because behind every small brand is a human story.

And we believe those stories deserve to be supported. So, check out the awesome brands in the People-first category and see which businesses are contributing to that cause.
